The Incas of Peru ruled Northern Chile also until the Spanish conquest in
1536-40. The Indians in the south, Araucanian, resisted the Spanish until the
late 19th century. Chile became independent in 1810-18. Chile defeated Peru
and Bolivia in 1836-9 and 1879-84. Thus, they gained the mineral rich land
of the north.
Eduardo Frei Montaiva became the head of the country in 1964. He
advocated social programs and gradual nationalization of foreign owned mining
companies. A marxist, Salvador Allende Gossens, became President in 1970
with one-third of the national vote.
Under this new government social programs were established to help the poor
but many illegal and violent actions were taking place by extremist supporters
of the government. The government was never able to get majority support
and poorly planned socialist economic programs led to political and financial
chaos.
A military coup took place in 1973 which planned to "exterminate Marxism."
Repression is still continuing in Chile.
